How Science Helps You Every Day

Science can sometimes feel very abstracted from your everyday life, especially if you think of it only as the theorems and equations you were taught in school. When do you use ‘force equals mass times acceleration’ in real life? How often does the chemical formula for carbon monoxide actually come in handy? Not often. However, while it may feel like science has nothing to do with your daily life, it touches almost every aspect of your life, from the moment you wake up to the moment you fall asleep.

Theories

Theories may seem like the most abstract part of science, but there’s a lot more to it than that. For starters, scientific theories are rigorously tested, and often can be visualized with accurate scientific modeling, even when they cannot be proven. For example, Einstein’s theory of general relativity hasn’t been proven, but it is also used every day by GPS to help ensure accuracy. Without adjustments derived from Einstein’s famous theory, satellite imaging and global positioning simply won’t work properly. You may think that scientific theories have nothing to do with you, but you couldn’t be more wrong.

Inventions

Even purely scientific endeavors like NASA have generated everyday inventions that changed the way we live our lives. The camera in your phone, the insulation in your house and the memory foam in your mattress were all developed either by or for NASA. These spinoff technologies wouldn’t exist without the purely scientific endeavors that is space exploration.

There are countless important inventions that only exist thanks to scientific endeavors with seemingly impractical applications. The next time you use your GPS or pick up your phone to take a picture, take a moment to remember that without science, none of these things could exist. The next time you catch yourself saying or thinking that science doesn’t matter in your daily life, think again.
